Based on an episode from the Indian epic Mahabharata, A Throw of Dice tells the story of two kings, Ranjit and Sohan, who both love Sunita, a hermit's beautiful daughter. But Sunita loves only Ranjit. Ranjit and Sohan share a passion for gambling and decide to play a game of craps to determine who will marry Sunita. "There's hardly a frame... that doesn't provide a surge of visual pleasure," wrote a New York Times reviewer; while a Guardian reviewer called it "a rare and fascinating gem." The film formed the final part of a trilogy of Indo-German productions. The film was digitally restored in 2007 and the brilliant new score was composed by Nitin Sawhney and performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Director Franz Osten was born in Germany in 1876 and lived for many years in India. In his film directing days, which ran from 1911 to 1939, he directed at least 57 films. He also was a producer and a writer.
