Four Women

ADOOR GOPALAKRISHNAN
India, 2007, 105 minutes, Color, 35mm

Based on short stories by Thakazhy Sivasankara Pillai, the film weaves together a story of four women in different social stratums. Set in the villages of Kerala, the film focuses on the limited choices facing women in a male-dominated society. In "The Prostitute," a former sex worker opts for marital status with dire consequences. In "The Virgin," a young woman suffers through a comically bad but mercifully short marriage. In "The Wife," a married woman takes extreme action to conceive a child. And in "The Segment," a young woman who is passed up for marriage in favor of her younger sister becomes an object of pity and burden in her family's eyes.

Director Adoor Gopalakrishnan is one of India's leading film makers. He is no stranger to DC, as the Smithsonian Freer and Sacker Gallery had a retrospective of his works in 2003. He received France's Legion of Honor in 2003, and was awarded the International Film Critics’ prize for five consecutive films. He also received the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award in India.
