Pancham Unmixed: An Unending Journey

BRAHMANAND SINGH
India, 2007, 113 minutes, Color, Digibeta

In Person: Director Brahmanand Singh

Popularly known as Pancham, Rahul Dev Burman was one of the most popular film music directors of his time. Son of famous film composer S.D. Burman, Pancham made his mark on Indian films during the late sixties as a music composer. During the next two decades, his songs and compositions in films often outshone the films in which the songs were featured. Though he died in 1994, his music still has an ardent following, as well as a lasting influence on the style and technique of India’s contemporary music composers. Pancham Unmixed explores his life and career, with anecdotes recalled by some of his closest friends and colleagues - including directors, music directors, and the legendary singer Asha Bhosle.

Director Brahmanand Singh has published stories and poems and has written essays on cinema, music, and literature in India and abroad. He has written screenplays and made short films and documentaries, including Ashgari Bai (on an octogenarian legendary dhrupad singer), A Burden of Love (on Alzheimer's disease), Uncaging the Body (Apsara Award for Best Short Film, 2003-2004) and Ragpickers, Scavengers of a Different Graveyard (2005). Singh lives in Mumbai.
