The Wild Bull

2007, 114 minutes, Color, DVD
When a wild bull runs into a small, remote village in Maharashtra, village elder Anna calls on city zoo-worker Swanand to help. Swanand's brother comes along to film the episode. The visitors from the city encounter the villagers as the latter pursue their romances and all aspects of their lives with innocence, openness, and great humor. Human curiosity, competitiveness, friendship and religious intolerance play out with the struggle to survive. The interactions are thought-provoking, giving us both pause and cause for celebration. Valu received awards for Best Director and Best Cinematography in 2008 at the International Film Festival in Pune, India.
Director Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni was born in 1976 and studied at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. He started directing short features and documentary films, including Darshan, Fed, Satyakam, and Save the Children. Before earning acclaim for Valu, he drew critical attention with The Grinding Machine three years ago.
