Taare Zameen Par

AAMIR KHAN
India, 2007, 167 minutes, Color, 35mm

Eight-year-old Ishaan Awasthi fills his world with imaginary creatures, but his parents are more interested in his homework and grades. He finds it difficult to keep up in school. His parents feel very hard-pressed when he gets into trouble and eventually send him to a boarding school, where they hope he can learn discipline. In addition to the trauma of separation from his family, here Ishaan suffers the same problems in school—until, finally, a new art teacher really tries to find out what is going on with Ishaan and discovers he is dyslexic. Celebrated for its depiction of a child's imagination (partly through the use of magnificent animation) and for its tenderness and emotion, the film has been both commercially and critically acclaimed, winning the 2008 Filmfare Best Director Award and other Filmfare and Star Screen Awards. It features music by the trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy with lyrics by Prasoon Joshi.

Director Aamir Khan is well known in film circles. He started as a child actor in 1973 and began his professional career with the film Holi in 1984. He has won the Filmfare Best Male Debut Award for his performance in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in 1988 and, after eight nominations, his first Filmfare Best Actor Award for Raja Hindustani in 1996 and his second for Lagaan in 2001. Taare Zameen Par is his directorial debut.
