An afternoon with Adoor Gopalakrishnan

1:00pm: Dance of the Enchantress - 75 Min– Documentary – 2007
With a live dance demonstration by Ms. Kalyani Pillai and followed by a Q&A with the director.

Veteran filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan explores the beauty of the devotional and sensuous dance form, Mohiniyattam (“mohini” means enchantress and “attam” translates as graceful movements). Originating in the southern region of Kerala, Mohiniyattam narrates stories of Lord Vishnu using mudras (hand gestures), music and body movements emphasizing the shades, colors and moods of love.

3:30pm: Oru Pennum Randaanum (A Climate for Crime) -120 minutes – Feature – 2008

Followed by a Q&A with the director.

A sequel to Adoor’s earlier film Naalu Pennungal, Oru Pennum Randaanum too is based on Thakazhi Shivasankara Pillai’s short stories. This film too consists of four independent chapters, bound by a recurring theme of crime, the stories being set in the 1940s in the Princely State of Travancore.
